How long has it been since the 9/11 Attack?

The September 11, 2001 attacks, commonly known as 9/11, were a series of coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by the extremist group al-Qaeda against the United States. On that morning, 19 hijackers took control of four commercial airplanes. Two of them, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were deliberately crashed into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, causing both skyscrapers to collapse within hours. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was flown into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was headed for another major target in Washington, D.C., but crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers fought back against the hijackers.

The 9/11 attacks resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people and led to significant global and domestic consequences. In response, the U.S. launched the War on Terror, including the invasion of Afghanistan to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power. Security measures were drastically tightened worldwide, especially in air travel, with the formation of the Department of Homeland Security and stricter airport screening procedures. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum now stands at the site of the World Trade Center to honor the victims and preserve the memory of that tragic day.
